Tartufo

A mix between gelato and a truffle, this classic Italian dessert originates from Pizzo, Calabria. According to records, it was created in 1952, by a gelataio named Giuseppe De Maria, known then as Don Pippo. Out of a need to create something new, he moulded a mixture of chocolate and hazelnut gelato, to surround a melted dark chocolate filling, finally he covered that in some bitter cocoa powder.

Traditionally, the Tartufo, was made with two flavours of gelato, with a fruit center (usually cherry)
