Hog Charge – Family Fun and a Great Cause to Boot!

Hog Charge Rhino Charge, Gelato fun

With such glorious weather, we have at the best opportunity to go outside and to get active! This years’ 19th Hog Charge at the Peponi Secondary School at Sukari Ranch in Ruiru was just that. A fantastic family day out with a great cause to boot. The energy was palpable with little ones and the young at heart on bicycles. There was a craft market with Kangarui hand designed and African inspired interiors as well as Kipato Unbranded with their gorgeous brass ensembles. There was lots to eat and drink as well with Fior di Latte providing their signature sorbet and gelato flavours   including our hand-crafted cones.

Bright eyed and teaming with energy!

The prep school kids arrived with their families bright and bushy tailed. The stream of cars with bicycles strapped on them started from 7am with the briefing commencing at 7:30am with 9:30am start. The children enjoyed riding in the wide open spaces of the ranch and alongside the dam which is resident to a couple of croc and hippo! What excitement!

Save the Rhino

Children from preparatory schools from Kenya participated in the action. They had started fund raising since late last year to help fence the Aberdare Ranges to protect the Rhino. This year, the children raised funds a total of Kes. 3.1m this year for Rhino Ark. A commendable achievement that also teaches the young ones to champion a worthwhile cause – the environment. The conversation of the white Rhino which is championed by the Rhino Ark has also achieved the preservation of seven tributary rivers that supply water to the Nairobi.

The highlight – The Gauntlet

From 11:00am on, the children had one more task! To return to the Peponi School ground for the Hog Charge Gauntlet event! In through the oh! so muddy muddy trough! with the bikes. Peppa Pig would love riding through this massive muddy puddle. The children come out of the other end drenched and positively mud clad 🙂

A Gelato (Italian Ice Cream) Treat

At the end of the gruelling competition was an array of Fior di Latte’s natural, artisanal and amazingly delicious gelato and sorbets. The range included Chocolate Chip, our signature Fior di Latte and Creamy Caramel. We also had our sorbets which are all vegan-friendly, dairy-free and fat-free including our signature Nyaruita’s tree tomato. We took this a step further and had sugar-free Pineapple and Passion which all sold out! The hand-crafted cones were a best seller with some customers buying cones on their own to much.

On to Save the Rhino

The Hog Charge is a great start to the year. It is fun family day out and an opportunity to teach our children to care about and take action about something larger than themselves – the environment. Would not be surprised to see a number of the children participating in Rhino Charge in the years to come.

Get those mountain bikes out and get the children riding in outside and away from the multiple TV, iPad, phone…screens. A great way to Save the Rhino and long with your wee ones.
